The kitchen of a house is the most important place of the household as it provides food and energy for the inhabitants and helps them perform their duties with best efficiency. Since it has a dire effect on the health, the kitchen should be planned with great care.
Apart from safety, location of the kitchen, direction and placement of kitchen components should be given importance to. The southeast corner is the ideal place for kitchens. Northwest corner is the second best choice. The directions that are to be avoided in kitchen construction are northeast, mid north, mid-west, southwest and mid south and the centre of the house.
Cooking food facing the east is considered to be best and auspicious. Stove should not be in a visible position as it might create digestion problems for the inhabitants. Cooking platforms should not touch the eastern or northern wall of the kitchen. Taps should not be close to the stove since fire and water repel each other. The kitchen sink should be in the northeast and dishwasher if any, should be kept in the northwest part of the kitchen. Cabinets in the northeast should store only light objects. Electric appliances should be kept in the southeast part of the kitchen.
Ample cross ventilation should be provided while constructing the kitchen. The windows in the east of the kitchen should be bigger than those on the south of the kitchen. There should be no toilets near, above or below the kitchen. Food should not be served at the centre of the kitchen.
